Chapter Thirteen

Under cover of darkness, Harley and I shared a scooter while Hannah led the way. Initially, Harley wanted to drive and take the lead, but Hannah quietly responded that she knew where to go. The way Hannah said it led me to believe there was a story there. One she didn’t want to share. Harley had caught my eye, and I could tell she wanted to ask her about it, but I shook my head. I still let Harley drive, which was probably a good thing since she was an expert at weaving around the many obstacles in our path.

When I offered to accompany Harley and Hannah to position the traps and sneak in to give Rylee Harley’s message, I wasn’t dwelling on the danger. I figured that if I was there to place the traps, I’d be less likely to inadvertently set one off in a panic. Em didn’t like it, but she wouldn’t try to talk me out of it. I was placing my life in the hands of a teenager and a model. The camp nickname for Hannah was Runway Warrior.

Hannah slowed her speed and veered to the left, dismounting and walking the bike into the heavily wooded forest. She found a dense thicket and concealed the scooter with the surrounding brush. Soon I wasn’t able to see any part of her bike. For good measure, she plunked down one of the noiseless traps, if you didn’t count the scream that might ensue if set off. Harley found a spot to conceal our scooter and laid down her own unpleasant surprise.

Hefting our packs, we hiked through the forest. I wasn’t as quiet as Hannah and Harley, but I had become more stealthy over the past couple of weeks of training and hoped the odd snap of a twig here or there wouldn’t give away our location. Caution adds a lot more time to a hike than I thought possible, but we finally reached the old tree after walking for nearly an hour.

Harley began frantically searching the area, and I wondered what the hell she was doing. I was close enough to see the near panic on her face.

“What’s the matter? The tree is right there.” I pointed to the old Douglas fir.

“I can’t find our flower. I need our flower,” Harley whispered.

Hannah touched her on the shoulder. “What does it look like?”

“It’s purple and sort of looks like a small crown.” Harley dropped to the ground, crawling around and pushing leaves and other debris aside in her search.

“Sounds like a Fairy Slipper.” I began searching the forest floor.

It was difficult to see in the dark. We needed the moon to help. But she was stubborn tonight, hiding behind a cluster of clouds.

I felt like a treasure hunter who’d finally come across the elusive chest of gold when I found the Fairy Slipper. Gently, I plucked the flower from the earth and snuck back to Harley, who was still focused on her own search. I touched her shoulder, and she jumped.
